December 31st, in Piazza Castello in Torino, Id-Lab organises and coordinates 4 workshops within the Capodanno del Design event, the first grand event of Torino 2008 World Design Capital. From the morning until well into the night, an open air event for which the public is called to contribute, to become co-author, to become a designer for a whole day or even just for half an hour.
Workshops will held 30 minutes and will be replied every hour, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
The workshops are intended for a public of 6 to 99 years old, and participants will have free entry until maximum capacity is reached.
Have you ever made drawings with light? Have you ever made a short animation film? No? Come and try. Using flashlights and color filters you can express your creativity and produce short videos where your luminous designs come to life.

The workshop is focussed on a simple technique used to create animations by drawing with light. A series of long-exposure stills are edited in a sequence to form a short film.
After a short introduction to the stop-motion technique and digital photography, the workshop participants will be guided to discover the magic of drawing with light.
The best videos will be displayed during the evening on the giant screens around the square.
The participants will take home a print of their best frame in 4'x6' format.
At the Pin-o-rama workshop you will be drowned by inspiring graphics (posters, cut-outs, magazines, photographs) and you will have all the instruments to create pin button badges with your own hands.

The badge phenomenon exploded in the 70's, in the swing of punk culture. Thanks to digital photography and the new communication technologies pin button badges are the craze once again. Just 25mm in diameter to express yourself and communicate.
After an introduction to the history and uses of these little gadgets, the workshop participants will be invited to chose and cut out the graphics to insert in the badges and personally produce them in 5 easy steps with the help of tutors.
At the end of the workshop each participant will take away his set of badges to wear during New Year's Eve.

Seeing the world and looking for new spurs are the elements for the birth of new ideas.
Every moment, place or situation can instantly suggest a thought. The thought takes true life only when it is blocked, traced, marked on a physical surface.
The workshop will be divided in two parts.
The fist section will explain to participants the usefulness of carrying a notebook in every moment. Different examples of how to produce a booklet starting from an A4 sheet will be shown, with consideration to simple ground-rules of page layout.
In the second section participants will be provided with all the necessary material and, step by step, folding and cutting paper sheets, they will produce a personalised notebook.

The workshop is centred on the the manufacture of a bag with the Upcycling method, i.e. the use of waste material (in our case plastic bags) for the production of useful objects.
Producing a bag starting from materials that are intended for a different use will offer the public the chance to create fashion design objects and enable them to carry the different materials made in the other workshops and/or distributed during the event.
The aim is to suggest how, with simple steps, we can create complex objects from daily use objects.
The workshop will present an introductory fist phase in which the tutors will demonstrate how a plastic bag can be turned into strong material ironing together different layers.
In the second phase, always under tutor supervision, the participants will exercise in the production and personalisation of a bag using the different composing elements previously prepared by the workshop staff.
"Capodanno del Design" is a plural event that engages several design studios. The complete event program will include also the following projects:
Luminous LED - the invasion of magnetic lights

Led Throwies are an invention of Graffiti Research Lab and they were born in New York.

ZYGOTE - Interactive ball
(schedule: 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. to 12 p.m)
Interactive light spheres fly on the square, gliding and bouncing on the audience. If you hit them, they light up, each time in different shade of Torino World Design Capital green.

DESIGN-ME

An interactive installation to narrate design starting from people's relationship with everyday objects. The audience sees and portrays itself: passive audience no more, it becomes the real pulsating protagonist center of the square.

FROM A VANISHED WORLD

A video installation made expecially by Botto&Bruno for the Capodanno di Torino 2008 World Design Capital. Images from the two world famous torinese artists animate and become moving electronic vistas. Music and video collaborate in creating a digital space the is disassembled and remade as a fascinating landascape.
